A Room of One's Own by Virginia Wolf

We are pleased to announce a call for female physicists’ photographs of the places and spaces of their work. The photographs are to be included in a new Bristol University Press Edited Collection entitled:

“Gender and Physics in the Academy: Theory, Policy and Practice in European Perspective” to be edited by Meytal Eran Jona, Pauline Leonard, Yosef Nir and Marika Taylor

This edited collection, which draws on a team of leading physicists and sociologists from across Europe, offers a comparative, interdisciplinary approach to investigating and understanding women’s under-representation in physics.

The book draws on social theoretical perspectives to understand the reasons for low levels of women’s participation in physics, both in terms of entering the field and sustaining a career over the life course. It also explores policy solutions adopted across different European contexts and evaluates their success.

Alongside the theoretical and empirical side of the book, the editors will include a chapter dedicated to visualizing gender and physics. This chapter will include photographs of female physicists in their workspace/office or laboratory, and will be called: A Room of One’s Own (in tribute to Virginia Woolf’s iconic book, first published in 1929).

In this chapter, we will seek to add a unique perspective to the book through a photo tour of the “real” workspaces of female physicists. The aim is to add a fresh, personal perspective on the lives of physicists, through their own eyes, on their work environment within academia and research institutions.

We invite female physicists to share their photos with us!

Requirements:

  • Still, black and white images of physicists, in their personal workspace, laboratory or office, inside or outside. The images should include the scientist herself.
  • The pictures should be of high professional quality.
  • File type: jpeg or jpg.

Each picture should be accompanied by a short description:

  • The physicist’s name
  • Where was it taken?
  • Photo description: what does this picture represent for you or why did you choose this particular photograph?
  • Photographer's name

The photos and accompanying text should be sent by e-mail to:

Sharon.diamant-pick@weizmann.ac.il by October 1, 2021.

From all the photos received, the book's editors will choose a selection of pictures to be included in the book, due for publication in 2022, both in paper and electronic forms.

Kind regards,

Dr. Meytal Eran Jona (Weizmann Institute of Science)

Prof. Pauline Leonard (University of Southampton)

Prof. Yosef Nir (Weizmann Institute of Science)

Prof. Marika Taylor (University of Southampton)
